Artist designs hospice care robot caresses arm to comfort the patient

Hospice care robots come out.

News on June 13th, Beijing time, imagine this moment: You are lying in a hospital bed in a sterile hospital, and you have only a few hours left to live. Your breath is weak and you are dying. A slick white robot begins to gently massage your arms with a oscillating motion and then says in a metallic voice: "I'm a hospice care robot. I'll help you guide you through the earth. Finally, I'm sorry, your family and friends are now failing to keep close to you, but don't be afraid.I'm here to comfort you.You are not alone, you are with me.Your family and friends love you very much. They will remember you forever after you go."

Is this a better way than waiting for death alone? Still scary? Did you hear such reassurance before your death, or just received a prefabricated response from a programmed robot with no thinking skills? Is this the feeling you need? So far, there is no such a real hospital bed, there is no such a real patient. The artist and designer Chen Dan (Dan Chen) proposed these questions and designed the plan to study our reaction to the intimate behavior of the robot.

Chen Dan, an engineer, artist and designer who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States, said: “This design shows the cruelty of life and the lack of human social relations. On the other hand, this kind of robot may become worthy of your trust. Or relying on a friend. It's done to achieve a 'placebo effect'."

Chen Dan graduated from the "Digital + Media" program and wrote a master's degree thesis titled "Relationship between Document, Preservation and Intimate Behavior" and explored a new field he called "Robot Intimacy Technology". He also created a variety of love machines, such as a "hugging robot" and a machine that can emit throat sounds.

At the last moment, the robot is a cushioned caressing arm that supports and comforts dying patients with a prerecorded voice. At the Brown University Science Center in Rhode Island, USA, an interactive device art exhibition named "Hospice of the End of Life" exhibited the new robot.

As long as the patient is lying down, this device will be activated. The LED screen shows the words "finding the end of life". "At this moment, the doctor will leave the room and leave the patient alone. Chen Dan said that when the LED display shows the words "finding the end of life," the robot arm begins to move forward and backward. This action is Considered to be a consolation gesture, he said: "This often causes visitors to feel a sense of contradiction between comfort and discomfort. The purpose of designing this kind of device is to cause controversy and ask people questions. Dying may be the most fragile moment in human life, and patients want comfort from human relationships. In this installation art exhibition, robots replaced people and gave some comfort words to patients. The purpose of this approach is only to explore the intimacy of quality beyond humanity. ”

This is just an art project. But after decades, with the continuous advancement of technology, who knows where the robot takes us? (xiaowen)
