Photocatalytic Oxidation of Methane in Fujian Research Institute

As an important fuel and chemical raw material, methane often plays an irreplaceable role in human production and life, profoundly changing people's lives. However, underutilized trace amounts of methane released into the air cause atmospheric pollution and greenhouse effects, and this issue is becoming a hot topic for environmentalists and climatologists. Due to the high bond energy and non-polarity of methane molecules, the efficient oxidation of methane under mild conditions is a very challenging scientific problem.

Funded by the "973" Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Yi Zhiguo Research Team of the Key Laboratory of Functional Nanostructure Design and Assembly of the Institute of Physical Structure of the Chinese Academy of Sciences adopts a photocatalytic method using zinc oxide polar semiconductors. The built-in electric field promotes the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, combined with the surface defect control of nano zinc oxide and the plasmon resonance effect of nanosilver (see the figure below), to achieve efficient oxidation of methane under mild conditions: UV (<400 nm) quantum The efficiency is close to 8%, and the visible light (~470nm) quantum efficiency exceeds 0.1%. The developed catalytic materials can not only efficiently oxidize small molecule hydrocarbons such as methane under aerobic conditions, but also can achieve oxygen-free conversion of methane. Using in-situ spectroscopic characterization methods such as infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance, the team conducted an in-depth analysis of the catalytic oxidation of methane and proposed a reaction mechanism based on two-step photo-oxidation.
