Multi-junction solar cell bottom layer research won the French and German Business Award

Researchers recently won the French and German Business Award for the development of reusable substrates for III-V multijunction solar photovoltaic cells.

The award was jointly awarded by the French, German and Chinese Chambers of Commerce (AHK) to reward those best practices in the past two years. The sponsors of the bonus include François Baroin, Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry of France, and Dr. Philipp Rösler, Federal Minister of Economy and Technology of Germany.

Multi-junction solar photovoltaic cells are particularly popular with large-scale solar photovoltaic power stations located in well-lit areas. Researchers at ISE and CEA-LETI have claimed that by developing reusable substrates, costs can be cut by 20%. This is particularly beneficial for companies such as SoitecSolar, who recently signed contracts for construction projects in China and San Diego. This solar photovoltaic cell will be used in concentrating photovoltaic modules.

Multi-junction solar photovoltaic cells consist of several semiconducting layers that together convert sunlight into electrical energy. This technique can be used for concentrating photovoltaic devices. Among them, the lens can focus the sun 500 times to a very small solar photovoltaic cell. These concentrating photovoltaic systems can perform large-scale solar power generation. The multi-junction solar cell itself consists of 30 semi-conductor bottom layers, one superposed on a super-pure crystal of gallium or gallium arsenide.

In the past, solar photovoltaic cells still had to stay on top of germanium or gallium arsenide crystals, and now solar cells can be removed from new layers that can be recycled and reused.

According to Dr. Frank Dimroth, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Solar Cells at the III-V Crystallization of the Fraunhofer Institute, “The Solar-Bond project is one in which the two high-tech institutes do their best. CEA-LETI is a leader in the field of microelectronics. , and Fraunhofer ISE is the leader in photovoltaics."

The division of research work is: French researchers are responsible for the development of the bottom layer and its properties in line with the needs of the continuous development of multi-junction solar cells. German scientists are responsible for applying solar cells to the bottom layer and processing them into finished products.

Solarbond is one of 26 projects sponsored by the InterCarnotFraunhofer project. This project was jointly run by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the French National Institute of Research. The purpose is to establish a strategic partnership between French and German research and industrial organizations.
