Solid-state hydrogen unmanned aerial vehicle flight successfully broke through the short bottleneck of lithium battery life

The solid-state hydrogen drone was successfully tested in the UK. In February of this year, the Scottish Marine Science Association (SAMS) successfully conducted the first flight test using a solid-state hydrogen-powered system drone at the Scottish airport, taking off for 10 minutes and running 200 feet and landing smoothly.

The prototype of the drone was developed by the British company Cella Energy and Arcola Energy. It uses Cella's hydrogen-powered gas generator and Arcola's integrated fuel cell.

The battery operates on the principle that the gas generator uses a proprietary solid material that will release a large amount of hydrogen atoms when heated above 100 °C. According to Phil Anderson, head of the Marine Technology R&D team at the Scottish Marine Science Association, drones can fly for two hours with this fuel. Its performance is three times that of lithium batteries, and it can also form a series of shapes for specific applications, suitable for mobile devices like drones.

For the time being, hydrogen fuels have outperformed lithium batteries. According to the data, a Singapore-based hydrogen fuel cell drone can fly for 4 hours without load, and can support 150 minutes at 1Kg full load. But a 300-gram lithium battery can only fly a 500-gram drone for 17 minutes.

The advantage of using a solid hydrogen route is storage. A report released at the Green Car Conference in February stated: "The newly developed material is stable in air at temperatures below 500 ° C, solving the problem of the need to compress hydrogen during transportation. Because it is A hydride that is chemically recyclable, so Cella Energy says it is working with partners in the chemical industry to take an existing approach to cost-effective industrial recycling at a certain scale."

Because solid materials are used instead of compressed gaseous hydrogen, this allows the material to remain stable in air and below 50 °C.
