Korea Develops "Paper Solar Cell" Manufacturing Technology

The Research Group of the Korea Electric Research Institute developed a paper-based solar cell manufacturing technology by using nanotechnology and fiber technology. The Korean solar industry community believes that the research results can break the current stagnant development of the Korean solar industry and open up new markets.

The idea of ​​"paper-type solar cell" manufacturing technology comes from the traditional Korean window structure. The research team stated that the silica was first fibrillated and the resulting fiber was used to make a nanopaper. Based on the paper-like structure, a metal mesh of a latticed structure is added to obtain a light-weight, durable, and freely bendable solar cell. The currently widely used solar cells are harder and thicker than the "paper solar cells" due to the rigid plastic base and glass structure. The main developer of the technology, Che Seung-yi of the Nano Fusion Technology Research Center of the Research Institute of Creative Sources at the Korea Electric Power Research Institute, said that due to the relatively simple production process, the use of “paper-type solar cell” manufacturing technology has led to mass production of solar cells. The process can save a lot of costs for the company. At present, the research team applied for four patents on this technology.

According to the Korea Electric Research Institute, "paper-type solar cells" can be used not only in everyday smart phones, but also in the fields of architecture, automotive and communications, and even in the defense industry.

At present, this technology has been selected as the theme of the thesis by the Academic Journal of Energy and Environmental Science. At the same time, it has been introduced and praised by the Chemical World published by the British Royal Society of Chemistry. (Reporter Xue Yan)
