According to a report by the British "Daily Mail" on April 24, US researchers have developed a new type of freezing method that can extend the life of lithium batteries, improve safety, and enable batteries to bend. This technology may be applied to smart phones and tablets to make them more flexible.
The liquid electrolyte in most of the rechargeable lithium batteries on the market is highly flammable, and can easily cause safety hazards, such as the explosion scandal before Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Therefore, researchers at the Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science decided to use a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid electrolyte and use an ice template to make a vertically aligned columnar structure of a ceramic solid electrolyte. Ceramic solid electrolytes have higher safety and conductivity.
Researchers said that this is the first time that the non-flammable and non-toxic flexible solid electrolyte has been used in lithium batteries using the ice template method. In the future, smart phones or tablets using this battery can be bent.
