300 Series Austenitic300 series Stainless Steel contains nickel and chrome. Nickel costs account for more than 65% of the total cost. The advantage is that anti rust effect is very good. The disadvantage is that price is high.
301, 302, 303, 304, 304L, 309, 316,316L and 321 are Chromium-Nickel stainless steels with high strength developed by cold working. This series is non-magnetic, not hardened by heat treatment, and has excellent formability. The most widely used austenite steel is the 304, also known as 18/8 for its composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 304 may be referred to as A2 stainless. The second most common austenite steel is the 316 grade, also referred to as A4 stainless and called marine grade stainless, used primarily for its increased resistance to corrosion. On account of adding molybdenum, the corrosion resistance is strengthening. It is used in cookware, chemical equipment and architectural applications.
