Since the United States imposed preliminary countervailing duties on photovoltaic products in mainland China in early June this year, mainland China's component manufacturers have significantly reduced the amount of orders they supply to Taiwan's mainland solar cell suppliers, and demanded that Taiwanese companies lower prices. Taiwanese manufacturers' polysilicon solar cell quotations have fallen from $0.40 per watt in early June to the current $0.37-0.39 per watt, the industry further pointed out.
Industry insiders claim that although Taiwan's polysilicon solar cells cannot compete with mainland China in terms of cost, monocrystalline silicon solar cell technology has advantages.
At present, the annual production capacity of Xinyang Energy Technology's monocrystalline silicon battery, the largest commercial solar cell manufacturer in Taiwan, has reached 1000MWp. In addition, Motech, Silicone Energy and Asahi Global Optoelectronics have expanded their monocrystalline silicon cell production capacity, with plans to reach 650MWp, 300MWp and 700MWp by the end of 2014.
